This course will provide fire service professionals with a comprehensive overview of the “Fire Is” fire safety education curriculum. The goal of this program, is not only reaching middle school-aged children as they begin to understand fire, but their parents/guardians and care givers as well. The curriculum is centered on a home-based learning system employing television, the internet, and public volunteers to put a new face on fire safety. Session attendees will receive copies of the program, letters of endorsement from pilot schools in NJ who have heralded its success; a course curriculum guide; and simplified instruction on how to implement the program without taxing the schools’ current curriculum or teacher workload.

The Montclair Times and Montclair TV34 are pleased to announce that the latest edition of Times, toois now available for viewing. Mark S. Porter, Editor, The Montclair Times discusses a new breed of Fire Safety program with his very special guest Dr, Frank Field.

A long time advocate of Fire Safety programs, Dr. Field describes the mechanisms of a new interactive program he has fostered into existence. As Dr. Field explains; “Very few fires begin in school. Most fires begin at home. Doesn’t It makes sense to bring Fire Safety education into the home rather than keep it in school?” To that end, Dr. Field marshaled schools, fire departments and local cable television stations to join forces. These combined forces will bring Fire Safety into the home on many levels.

An exciting, new interactive aspect, the website, www.NJFireSafety.com completes the outreach efforts by offering up video on demand, posting timely updates and offering visitors a place to exchange comments and offer suggestions.

The first in the series of Fire Education programs; “Fire is Black” will be launched during the first week in October. Additional segments will be introduced on a monthly basis

To celebrate Fire Prevention week, October 3-9, 2010, principals throughout the school district along with Chief Leonard Dolan and Safe Kids New Jersey have joined together to present the first in a series of important family fire safety and prevention lessons. This year’s video lesson will be introduced the first Friday of the month with a different video each month for six months. These video lessons will teach both caregivers, parents and children to the reality and danger of fire. ”Fire is Black” will begin airing on Friday, October 1st. The video will be available for viewing in residents homes on the Cranford Public Schools website at www.cranfordschools.org , TV35 the communities local access channel along with on this website, www.njfiresafety.com .

NJ State Law requires that all schools in the state teach fire safety and prevention. While Stop, Drop and Roll lessons are fun and informative, a NJ Homeland Security Grant is enabling schools to go beyond the basics and help teach the more, serious life-long lessons of fire safety. After viewing the videos, there will be four questions that students/parents will be asked to answer with a “yes” or “no”. After the six months of videos, a quiz will be posted for the students. The Cranford School District will announce a winner’s name on their website.
